PR Fresh Looks Makeover

Everyone has go to love salon makeovers no matter what the occasion and before and after photos are designed to show dramatic changes in cut, color, and style which is why many before photos are taken with the client in their worse hairstyle, un-styled and untouched. We look at the dramatic change and we fall in love with the hairstyle makeover and that is why we have to point out those that are done greatly. PR at Partners Salon and Spa does a hands down fantastic job with their Fresh Looks total makeover. From changing hair length to color and style, the staff does a fantastic job and here is an example.

The asymmetrical bob looks fantastic and the color is enhanced with highlights. The end result is a new hairstyle that does an excellent job at facial framing and compliments her look.

Pink Hair For Hope

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and it is important for everyone to help this great cause. Although this is a hair style related blog, there are many fields that can still help with the issue and salons all over are joining. There are many ways that salons and their clients can help including donating proceeds from free haircuts or merchandise to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and other popular way is joining with SO.CAP.USA Hair Extensions’ Pink Hair For Hope program and purchasing a small pink hair extension for just $10 dollars with proceeds from the sale going towards the National Breast Cancer Foundation. It is such a simple step to take to help a very worthy cause. If you’re a salon owner or employee, find or suggest a way where your salon can help and for everyone else please help by participating with these salons. Below is a list of ideas and websites that are good sources to learn more about Breast Cancer Awareness.

Ideas for Salons:
Free Day of Haircuts with Proceeds Going to the foundation
Selling T-shirts or other merchandise like these cute scrunchies

Donate proceeds for a days work and merchandise
Participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® and encourage clients to do so to
Just don't help for this one month but at different times the whole year.

Kate Moss Wax Figure

kate-moss-wax, originally uploaded by DianaHolly.

It is amazing how the people who create these wax figures put so much detail in their work. I have been to a wax museum and it is very shocking just to see. For the recent London fashion week, there was a creation of model Kate Moss and I just had to talk about the hair they placed on the wax figure. Not only does it look totally real but it is styled in a beautiful style that the model would wear to some red carpet event. This leaves me to wonder if the hair is infused into the figure itself or they use a very good wig that is pre-styled.

Bilson Ad for TRESemme

Rachel Bilson has been a model for many products and after browsing around I found a great picture of her for her new ad campaign for TRESemme. I love this hairstyle but it looks hard to get done without some very professional help. The hairstyle is a chignon style look without a tight bun and instead looser sections are tied together. The front of the hairstyle is amazing with a long sweep on one side. I wish they would load the video for doing this exact look as many of my friends are not able to style this look so well. Here is the picture and a great site to visit is http://style-seeker.tresemme.com

Beautiful Red Frenzy Hair

Peter_Berberian_2_medium, originally uploaded by A Fine Frenzy.

Red hair can range from brassy in tone to vibrant with flair and we want to take a look at some stars in this section, starting with A Fine Frenzy's Alison Sudol who has a rich shade of red on her album cover and it this great shot. Everyone has to love this hairstyle with a large, swept bangs, and large curls midway through her hair. She looks gorgeous with this hairstyle, better than the one on her album cover.

For women with red hair we have a few tips to keep it rich and dark or colorful and vibrant. First there is protection from the sun. Exposure to the sun or even elements in swimming pools can really turn red shades dull. Use protecting sprays to finish off a hairstyle for days of major outdoor exposure. Try to stay away from major color changes like say to blond or black. Use a color enhancing product at least once a month to keep the color at its fullest. For extra punch, a glaze seems to work very well with red hair color.

Bridal Hairstyle

There are plenty of hair salons that offer bridal hairstyling services and it is time to highlight some of the best bridal hairstylist out there. This section should grow dramatically as more and more stylists send in their photos. Well lets start by showing a beautifully done bridal hairstyle from New York City, the East Village to be exact. Hair by Stacy Pitt offers hairstyling services from simple cuts to extensions but her work on wedding hairstyles is where her talent really shows. There are some great samples of her work and the one below is one of the best.

The hair is styled in a wide updo that is full of curled pieces. The wide updo is one of the harder ways to style to match facial features but it is done very well here with enough spacing in the updo and with proper size of the curls. The floral accessory just tops off the entire look and the bride has to be very happy with such a beautiful hairstyle. Kudos to Stacy for some awesome styling work.

Signs of an Excellent Salon

Truth be told there are salons out there with some great hairstylists that can pull miracles out of their scissors and create anyone's funky hair to a masterpiece but there are also some salons where you go in expecting a simple cut & style and end up running out of there as fast as you can while surfing your phone for another hair salon for major repair. Here are three good signs of salons with great stylist. The hairstylist have been there for a while, salons do not want to get rid of their great stylist unless of course these stylist setup their own salons. Next is a website. A salon that does not even invest in a website to show their stylist and portfolio in this day and age is well, OUT-DATED. The last is to check out their portfolio and here is a great example.

This is a fantastic hairstyle from the Keith Kristofer Salon who also took the photos. Wow a salon and a photo shoot all packed in one. If you are from Austin, TX there is no reason not to visit this salon for your hair cut and styling needs. Way to go guys.

In Search Of Summer Hair

Summer time is a great opportunity to try a new hairstyle and the search begins with a hunt on the internet. There are tons of sources out there and Marie Claire has a small gallery with some decent pictures. http://www.marieclaire.com/hair-beauty/trends/articles/hairstyle-handbook-gallery actually shows a couple options for short hair. Some of the hairstyles are out of date but a few will fit lots of women. Take a look and browse.

Donate Your Hair

Every day there are women, teens, and children out there who cut their long hair for something shorter but what many of these women don't know and don't do is donate their hair to organizations that use this hair to make wigs for those in need. It is so touching to read about these stories and there is just no excuse for anyone with long hair and going shorter not to donate their hair to a program like Locks of Love. Here are some stories and pictures of some very kind-hearted people who took the extra effort to donate their time and hair to a good cause. Here is a site that list some donating options

Green Hair in the Pool

Summer time means more people are enjoying a dip in the pool and this means hair getting strained in chlorine and blond hair turning a slight shade of green. Hopefully all women are washing their hair afterwards and conditioning it very well. Contrary to some beliefs, the green tint produced on blond hair after a swimming session is not produced by algae or the chlorine itself. The green color actually comes from the several different reasons and one of these is the level of copper oxide particles present in the water along with the pH level as well. The pH level causes the copper elements to oxidize and cause all hair colors to have the green color but it just shows more on lighter shades.

There are some solutions to the problem including some to prevent it and some to take the green out. Some solutions for removing the green tint include washing the hair with certain shampoos, using lemon juice, using tomato juice, or washing with baking soda. For solutions for preventing the hair from turning green in the first place, there are ways to make the water more pH balanced but let's leave that to experts in that field.

Alexandre de Paris Salon

There are lots of hair salons that have been offering free services for charity during these hard economic times and for personal reasons as well like raising money for Locks of Love or another organization. These salons definitely need to be recognized and praised for their hard work, commitment, and kindness in spending their time sometimes without pay to help others out. The Alexandre de Paris Salon in Fairfax Virginia is one of these salons who set up a Hair-Makeover Charity Event that lasted for 3 days from 8am to 8 pm. The event offers free hairstyling service for anyone over 18 preparing for a job interview, reentering the workforce or wishing to look and feel their best during this time of economic hardship. 100 percent of the donations from the event were donated to Dress for Success, a non-profit charity organization. Cheers to Alexandre de Paris and the hairstyling team for giving up their time for a great event. Check the salon's website at http://alexandredeparis.com

Cutandstyled.com

Here is an interesting website that I am now a part of called Cutandstyled.com. The website allows women and men to upload before and after pictures of their hairstyles to share with other people. One of the people running it, Gabriel has requested that I become a hair guru and review some of the hairstyles. I have already done two which can be found here http://www.cutandstyled.com/styles/medium/23.html and http://www.cutandstyled.com/styles/medium-short/17.html and it was very fun. Looking forward to doing more and showing some of them on this blog. If anyone wants to be on the website please feel free to drop me an email at diane.holland00@yahoo.com

Cheap Hair Services Through Cosmetology Schools

aveda-047, originally uploaded by DianaHolly.

In a tight economy where saving here and there can be a big difference and pampering yourself at a high end Salon and Spa is just not an affordable option, here is a great solution, try going to a cosmetology or beauty school. Cosmetology schools are designed so that students have certain hours, usually around 1500 or more before they can graduate. These hours include hair services such as cutting, coloring, and other advanced techniques as well like straightening. Students are required to work on model dummies with hair on them until they are proficient enough and then can work on individuals usually brought in by the students, the school, or as volunteers. The end result is cheap hair services from someone who is almost ready to work in the real world at a salon that you could currently be going to. $8 dollar haircuts, $20 dollar highlights, and $5 dollar styling are all possible prices at many of the schools around the country. You can also get some spa services like manicures done as well at many schools.

Cosmetology School Horror Stories

Of course there are going to be horror stories from plenty of people who have tried this option and were not pleased with the result but there are just as many that ended up with a hairstyle or treatment that met their expectations. Here are some tips that can help prevent a hair disaster from a beauty school.

1. Make sure to know who is cutting your. Just like in a real salon you want to know how experienced the student is, how their work is, and their reputation. This can be done by asking the teachers or looking at the student’s previous work.
2. Don't go for anything too major. Cosmetology school students are taught the basic and some advanced techniques but not too many have the experience for major changes, fixes, or other situations.
3. Have a supervisor present. Most schools usually have a teacher or supervisor present during live cutting times to help out.

Cute Prom Updo Hairstyle

prom-hair, originally uploaded by DianaHolly.

After searching for some prom updo hairstyles to post, which was difficult because a few sites had some old styles that should not even be posted, the discovery of this cute look was a blessing. This updo hairstyle is so so adorable and lots of ladies should be able to pull this off. The front features a flattering swept fringe and a complex bun that is tied to the side. There are lots of ways to bundle the hair in the back but the front is styled to soften facial features and match any dress. The single tress coming down on the side is a great finishing touch as well and can be changed to both sides too.

Prom Hair Group

Spring time is all about Prom for high school seniors and juniors and the search for a dress and a matching hairstyle are important during this time. I happened to come across a group with some gorgeous dresses and hairstyles and am a little jealous that they have such a large group of pretty friends together. My favorite one is the pretty lady in the white dress, the sixth spot counting from the left side. The dress is pretty and she has a chignon hairstyle to match.

Prom Hair Contest

prom-ensemble, originally uploaded by DianaHolly.

Prom-hair.com is a site that just wrapped up it's contest on the best prom ensemble and although the contestant I voted for didn't win, the winner was pretty good as well. The site itself has some beautiful, updated formal hairstyles that would look great at prom. There are some photos with multiple angles which is always a plus because a lot of other sites just offer a front view which does not allow anyone to get a complete look. Back to the contest, the image above is what the winner compiled as her prom ensemble and she did a great job. The dress and accessories match perfectly as do the shoes. The hairstyle which Hilary Duff is wearing is beautiful but would cover the necklace. An updo would work much better for the entire look and style. Check out the other contestants here http://www.prom-hair.com/ensemble/votes.php and visit the site if anyone is looking for prom hairstyle ideas.

Sunsilk Beyond Brunette For A Dollar

Well in this tough economy we have to find the best deals and besides the use of coupons a friend of mind showed me another great secret and that is to hit up the Dollar retail stores which are practically everywhere these days. These stores sell everything for a dollar and after first browsing around I found only cheap hair care products like White Rain and some generic brands but then found some better ones like L'Oreal and the Sunsilk. I found a bottle of Sunsilk's Beyond Brunette Color Boost and being a brunette immediately jumped on this deal. It was a super steal and after looking at the cost of this product on Amazon.com which was $15.99, it is easy to see that I will be hitting up the Dollar retail stores more often for cheap finds on other hair care products.
